10/6/12 ~ Indian Summer Kafana Balkan (San Francisco)
Sep 21st, 2012 by peter

Kafana Balkan 10/6/12

Wild brass and shaking floors at the Kafana Balkan party.

Combining exuberance with melancholy, abandonment with abandon, musical traditions as far-flung as Spanish Flamenco, Romanian Manele, Gypsy jazz, and even the youthful strains of modern-day Gypsy punk, have a way of getting under the skin right on down to the toes-which will almost assuredly be tapping. Label it folk music if you must, but don’t expect a lot of polite purists holding forth while holding back. Balkan (Gypsy) music is party music, and Zeljko Petkovic aka DJ Zeljko’s (in)famous Kafana Balkan evenings are always one of the consistently best parties in town.

This time we’re thrilled to have Jill Parker’s Foxglove Sweethearts performing tribal bellydance for y’all during the set break! And of course DJ Željko will rock the dance floor whenever we’re not doing it!

Saturday, October 6th
Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell at Van Ness, SF
9PM ~ $13.

The Performant ~ when in Roma (SF Bay Guardian)
Aug 1st, 2012 by peter

Original here ~ When in Roma – SF Bay Guardian

the combination of brass band dynamics infused with an imitable Balkan spirit (no, not rakia), can’t fail to inspire. [...] The Menažeri inspired the celebratory spontaneity and cathartic release of a pagan solstice.

4/4 ~ Yoshi’s Oakland ~ the sensitive side
Mar 22nd, 2012 by peter

Word: Brass Menažeri has been invited to headline our hometown’s most prestigious jazz club (which is, of course, also a fantastic Japanese restaurant)!

For the occasion, we’ll be busting out a lot of repertoire we don’t usually play for our jumping dance parties. You know, our sensitive side. Arrangements of beautiful Turkish & Indian tunes, esoteric & complex Greek Macedonian rhythms, syncopated Macedonian ballads. We’re thrilled to get the opportunity to play these tunes we love & seldom perform!

Come hear Brass Menažeri like you’ve never heard us before.

Wednesday, April 4 ~ 8pm
Yoshi’s Oakland
510 Embarcadero West, Oakland
Tickets $15, available

6/30 Kafana Balkan with Fishtank Ensemble at Great American
Mar 12th, 2012 by peter

Kafana Balkan 6/30/12 at Great American Music HallLook out: We’re going to blow up the summer with the maddest Kafana Balkan yet. This is the next level you keep hearing about, in the illustrious Great American Music Hall!

We’re bringing in reinforcements in the form of the FISHTANK ENSEMBLE‘s cross-pollinated Romanian/Romani/Flamenco/Balkan virtuosity!

& DJ ŽELJKO’s got a whole set of surprises in store for you on the dancefloor.

& finally BRASS MENAŽERI throws down like we throw down: way down. No, even lower. Lower. Yeah, right there.

This party will be the biggest Balkan party of the entire summer, and this might be the last summer ever, and do you really want to tell your grandkids you missed the biggest Balkan party of the last summer ever? No, you don’t.

PLUS it’s the LAST Brass Menazeri show until the fall, as we’re taking a hiatus for the summer! It’s basically DOWNRIGHT APOCALYPSE right after this show, so come dance on the embers with us!

Stevens Family Gypsy Boys (Paul and George Stevens)

“Paul and George Stevens (Gypsy Boys) have been playing music since they were children. They started performing about ten years ago. And have made a lot of parties an experience that will never be forgotten. They don’t just stand there and play. The Guitar player plays guitar and Dances at the same time it’s a really cool show. They also have a 10 piece band known as A Band of Gipsy’s.”
